 A stranger (William Petersen) aids New Mexico nuns (Barbara Hershey, Diane Ladd) in 1878, building a circular staircase to a seemingly unattainable choir loft.

A small chapel's choir loft survives incomplete with no staircase, until one day a mysterious drifter, with a background in carpentry, arrives in town.
